Joe & Mimma's

694 J Clyde Morris Blvd
Newport News, VA
link

My wife and I went on a date to this local favorite after hearing friends rave about it. I was skeptical that it could live up to the hype, but we were quite impressed with the food and service as well. I ordered the seafood cannelloni, and she got the chicken cannelloni. The dinners came with choice of garden salad or ceasar and bread. The salads were great with homemade dressing, the bread rather unremarkable. The olive oil and pepper that was served to dip the bread in was amazing! When our entrees arrived I thought they looked rather small at first. But in the end I could hardly finish it! My seafood cannelloni had a tomato cream sauce, and it was so good I can hardly describe it! The chicken cannelloni had a spinach alfredo sauce that was more subtle than mine, but also very good! If I had to pick one of them to have again, I would have to get half of each! The service was excellent as well. This is one of those places that knows the regular customers, and takes an interest in the people they serve food to. My kind of restaurant!

The Commodore Theatre

421 High Street
Portsmouth, VA

link

It might seem strange to see a movie theatre on a restaurant blog, but the Commodore is a unique place! Go there once and you will see what I mean. They serve a full menu from the floor seats, and candy, popcorn, and soft drinks to the balcony seats. My wife and I went there the other day for a 2:00 matinee, and were happy to get good floor seats in the back. Evidently those are the best seats, but I'm not sure. We got a nacho platter and a fruit and cheese tray to share. I would recommend getting a pitcher of soft drinks if you plan on drinking more than one glass, as it is a much better deal. The presentation for both menu items was very nice. And they tasted just as good as they looked! The nachos came with bbq beef on the side, instead of chili. I've never had nachos with bbq beef before, but it was very good. I will go back again just for these nachos. The ambience is very nice. Think Cinema Cafe but much nicer. About getting tickets, you can only get them the day of the showing. The box office opens up at 12:45pm though. Recommend you get there at that time to get evening tickets to a opening weekend movie. We got there at about 1:20 or so and were able to get floor seats for the 2:00 show. It's not a bad idea to drop someone off to get in the ticket line, then drive around the corner to the city parking lot behind the Children's Museum (parking is free on the weekends) and walk over.

Smitty's Better Burger

1313 N King Street
Hampton, VA 23669
(757)723-0661

Smitty's has been around for a very long time, and still serves food the same way. Although I believe they used to be on roller skates. The prices are very good, and the food good as well. I usually get a hamburger or cheeseburger, but the chicken dinner is a winner as well. Try the apple sticks for a unique dessert.

Pop's Drive In - Yorktown

6555 George Washington Mem Hwy
Yorktown, VA
(757)898-6870

Pop's Drive In is a great place for lunch! And after looking at the menu (in the link I posted) it looks pretty good for breakfast too. When I went I had a ribeye sandwich (on the recommendation of a co-worker) and it was awesome! For $3.95 you won't get a better lunch. I don't usually get fries so I got a foot long chili dog instead, and it was very good too.

Himalaya - Portsmouth

3208 Academy Ave
Portsmouth, VA 23703
(757)686-1588

This little Chinese take-out place used to be a standard for my wife and I. It is situated in Academy Crossing right next to Blockbuster video. We would go place an order, then pick out a movie and then go pick up our order. I'm not sure if Blockbuster kept Himalaya in order or vice versa, but it was a convenient location for us! I always got kung pao chicken, and it was the best I ever had. My wife usually got shrimp and broccoli. Technically you could eat it there as they have about 5 or 6 tables, but I never saw anyone eating in the dining area. Matter of fact it was rare to see anyone in there at all unless they were ordering. Most people were next door picking out a movie!

Dino's Pizza - Newport News

14357 Warwick Boulevard
Newport News, VA 23602
(757)877-1894

Dino's has the best pizza in Hampton Roads! I've never even tried their other food because the pizza is so good, but others I have been there with say the subs and other entrees are good too. If you are picking toppings, I would suggest leaving off the ground beef. It has a sort of gritty texture that reminds me of a cheap frozen pizza. This restaurant is family owned with a great friendly atmosphere. Be sure to get a discount card the first time you go in, because you will be back!

Jones Restaurant - Portsmouth

5811 W Norfolk Rd
Portsmouth, VA 23703
(757)484-1996

This is another place you would drive right by if you didn't know better. Matter of fact I did until a friend
recommended it. Jones Restaurant has good food at good prices. I just went there today and got a dozen hush puppies ($2). When I got there I decided to get a large BBQ sandwich w/ coleslaw ($3.95) as well. They have great lunch and dinner specials. Everything I've eaten there was good. The decor is dated, but if you want a family friendly BBQ place in Churchland this is it!
