Jones Restaurant - Portsmouth

5811 W Norfolk Rd
Portsmouth, VA 23703
(757)484-1996

This is another place you would drive right by if you didn't know better. Matter of fact I did until a friend
recommended it. Jones Restaurant has good food at good prices. I just went there today and got a dozen hush puppies ($2). When I got there I decided to get a large BBQ sandwich w/ coleslaw ($3.95) as well. They have great lunch and dinner specials. Everything I've eaten there was good. The decor is dated, but if you want a family friendly BBQ place in Churchland this is it!

Tommy's Restaurant - Hampton

3406 West Mercury Boulevard
Hampton, VA 23666-3705
(757)825-1644

This is my favorite breakfast spot on the peninsula. Very reasonable prices, and great food. Be sure to try the homemade sausage patty. Be warned that the line to get in will be long, it usually moves pretty fast. And it is well worth it. And bring cash because they don't take credit cards!

Golden City - Hampton

1040 Settlers Landing Road
Hampton, VA 23669-5104
(757)728-9782

1406 East Pembroke Avenue
Hampton, VA
(757)722-8889

8 Old Fox Hill Rd
Hampton, VA 23669
(757)728-3887

There are 3 Golden City locations in Hampton. The location at Hampton University has lunch specials for less than $4. The special comes with a main entree and fried rice. Sesame Chicken is my favorite but they have Beef & Broccoli, General Tso's Chicken, Sweet and Sour Chicken, and others. I'm not sure about the lunch special prices at the other 2 Hampton locations.

Rancho Grande - Chesapeake

1320 South Military Highway
Chesapeake, VA 23320-2514
(757)366-5128

Rancho Grande is a great Mexican restaurant, and very popular with locals. It's been some time since I've been there, but I remember the food being very good. If I lived in Chesapeake this would be where I went for Mexican food.

County Grill - Hampton & Yorktown

26 E Mercury Blvd
Hampton, Va 23669
(757)723-0600

1215-a George Washington Hwy
Yorktown, Va 23693
(757)591-0600

County Grill has two locations on the peninsula, one in Hampton and the other in Yorktown. Both are excellent and feature the same items on the menu, although the one in Yorktown has a more casual laid back atmosphere. The brisket sandwich has about enough beef for two sandwiches! Same with the fried flounder sandwich. And at about $8 that's a very good deal. For dinner there are several platters to choose from and you can mix ribs, chicken, pulled pork, and more! You will need such a large amount of food to try all six bbq sauces. The varieties are Carolina, Memphis, Lexington, Kansas City, Savannah, and Southwest Texas. The complimentary corn muffins are great too! I always have a great time at this place, and it is a good place for a group dinner/event or a date.

Lee's Hot Dogs - Portsmouth

400 Broad St
Portsmouth, VA 23707
(757)397-4124

I used to live around the corner from this place. I would often walk up there and get the usual, hamburger all the way and chili dog all the way. As far as I am concerned Lee's makes as good a burger as you will find in the Hampton Roads area. If you didn't know any better you would drive right on by, but be sure to stop in! Also, note that they close at 4pm during the week and noon on Saturdays. Sundays they are closed.

Note about breakfast: I've gotten the breakfast sandwiches there a few times and they are very good too!

Grand Opening

I started this blog because I love to find local mom and pop restaurants, and many of them cannot be found on local restaurant guides. You won't see reviews here for Applebees or Olive Garden. Those places have decent food, but everyone already knows what to expect at a franchise eatery. I have a bunch of restaurants that I want to review, and I will post them when I get time. Feel free to send me your favorite local places too!
